Seen in 1884 as "The Sir Richard Arkwright Inn"

The reason for the disparity in the above addresses, is that

the Arkwright Arms has occupied two neighbouring properties

at different periods of time; one in the premises now known as

Arkwright House, and the other at the corner of Stoneygate 

and Shepherd Street.

This used to be the house occupied by the Head Master of the
Old Grammar School.  It became a public house when he moved 
out. It was owned by the Corporation, and it remained so until 1852
when it was sold to Richard Threlfall, junior, wine and spirit merchant.

On the 12th January 1892, it was sold again, to Mr. A. Margerison 
of the firm Messrs. J. Margerison and Co., Preston, who transformed it
into a lodging house.

Arkwright  House, as we are familiar with it today.
The windows on the neighbouring property are
recognisable in drawings of the properties in years
gone by. See below.

In 1883, the renewal of Nathan Mather's licence was objected to for

allowing betting on the premises. It was renewed with a caution.

Arkwright House had been built in 1728 as a residence for the headmaster
of the town's grammar school which once stood on the site of the adjoining
building on the right

These are just a few notes that I've gather from various sources. Hope they're useful.

REVENGE  AND  RETRIBUTION.
A man named Robert Greer, was charged with aiding and abetting John Watson, of the Arkwright Arms, Stonygate, in committing a breach of licence.
Mr. Ascroft who conducted the prosecution, said Watson had already been before the Bench and ordered to pay costs. It appeared that the defendant went on the forenoon of Sunday 25th November, to Watson's house, and asked for a glass of ale. He was told that there was none drawn, and he then got a noggin of rum. He met a person immediately afterwards and told him the rum was not fit to drink. The boy who had supplied it said he would take it back, but the defendant said, "No, I will take it to the police station, and make you pay." He then went to the police station and gave information.
He (Mr. Ascroft) was afraid there was something at the bottom of the matter - that a person who was a policeman had got the defendant to go to the house and get Watson fined out of revenge.
Hugh Watson was called, and said his father was the landlord of the Arkwright Arms Inn. He supplied the defendant with six pennyworth of rum on the morning in question. The defendant told him he was it for a sick person.
Inspector Withers said the defendant came to the police station about half past ten on the morning of the 25th ult., and said he had been to Mr. Watson's behind the church and got some rum, which he produced, and which he said was not fit to drink.
In reply to a question, it was stated that the defendant lived in Bridge Street, next door to William Kenny, who had been a member of the borough police force.
The Bench asked the defendant if he was prepared to pay the costs incurred, and he replied that he was not, so the Bench said they would remand the case until Friday. The defendant then said that he would pay the costs, and desired the magistrates to dispose of the case then; but they told him that they had given him the chance of paying the costs once, and they were not disposed to alter the decision they had arrived at.
