GOLDEN LION, Ward's End

A picture similar to the above appeared in the
Preston Guardian of 16.3.1941, with the caption,
"The building in the picture, the Golden Ball, 
but was previously the "Swan with Two Necks"
(A. WADE.)
The Swan with Two Necks was in the Strait Shambles,
so the above comment was totally wrong. (Pers. comm)
This sketch gives the impression that Ward's End came to an end to the right of
the Golden Lion. It didn't, of course, and many of us will remember walking through Ward's End to the old Ribble Bus Station.
Visitors to the Guild Hall are making a similar journey when they enter that building
from Lancaster Road. The shops on the ground floor are probably standing on the same ground.

MINE HOSTS:
According to some sources, this inn has its origins in about 1654, and as such would be one of, if not the oldest inns in Preston........... Personally, I have grave doubts.

    Richard Turner was my 4 x great grandfather ... He went on to run the Bowling Green Inn and later died of liver failure aged 53...
