BILLIARDS
Mons. Adrian Izar, from France, gave a wonderful
and very interesting entertainment, at the NORTH
WESTERN HOTEL, Fishergate, Preston, on Friday
evening last, in the shape of a game of billiards, in
which he gave Mr. Timbrell, of Liverpool, 100 out
of 500.
Mon. Izar played the balls by merely twisting them
with the thumb and finger, not using the cue.
The French gentleman won.
Application was made for an order for the confirmation
of the removal of the licence from the Stoneleigh Abbey,
to the North Western Hotel. Mr. Harding was the owner
of the premises, and had accepted the decision of the Bench
that the new wing to the premises should not be used as
vaults. The door had been made built up, and the place was
being made into a coffee room. He thought the premises
formed a marked contrast to the Stonleigh Abbey Hotel,
which was in a dangerous condition.
The license was was confirmed.

REMINISCENCES OF THE WEST SIDE
OF FISHERGATE RAILWAY BRIDGE
"On the western side of the bridge there used to be s
number of cottages, with white-washed fronts, also shops.
There was also the well-known Stoneleigh Abbey Hotel,
occupied by Mrs. Leigh.
The places were entirely pulled down to make way for the
new bridge and railway widening. On the west side of the
bridge there is now the large branch carriage depot of
Messrs. W. Harding & Co., and part of the block is occupied
as a furniture warehouse by Messrs. Dawson.
Contiguous is the building formerly occupied as a private
residence by the late John Bairstow. It is now the North
Western Hotel, with the spirit vaults at the higher end.
The Bairstow Memorial Chapel was erected in 1869 in
memory of J.B., a munificent benefactor of the church.
He was a partner in the firm of Horrockses, Miller & Co,
long before the late Alderman Miller was connected with it.
Mr. Bairstow, a native of Halifax, was one of the apprentices
of Mr. John Horrocks, the founder of the cotton trade in Preston;
and after his retirement from business he occupied for many
years, the house in Fishergate now known as the North
Western Hotel, crowning "a youth of labour with an age of ease."
He died on 7th December 1868 aged 90 years.
MARRIAGE - On the 7th December 1875, at Christ
Church, by Rev. Raymond Firth, Joseph Adam, youngest son
of the late James Parkers Esq., of Italian Villa, Winckley
Square, to Eleanor, youngest daughter of Mr. William Shaw,
North Western Hotel, Preston.
