STRAWBERRY GARDENS, Hudson's Brow

STRAWBERRY GARDENS
Hudson's Brow (now London Road)
*
The original "Strawberry Gardens" were situated where the
Frenchwood Social Club now stands. In fact it's still it's postal address.
The replacement house was sited next to London Road, about 80 yards due east.
*
This drawing has been taken from a recently discovered plan,
drawn at the time efforts were being made to move the license from a position 90 yards to the west, to the edge of Hudson's Brow, now London Road. See lower down the page for a description of its position.
QUESTION:  WAS IT EVER BUILT?
IF IT WAS, IS THERE ANY EVIDENCE?
Please speak to elderly Fishwick residents and let me know, please.

In the 1851 census, there was a property
in Fishwick called Hudson's Brow or Strawberry House.
It was occupied by James Walmsley (45 years)
and Betty Walmsley (44 years) b. Preston.
James was described as a joiner, employing
four labourers. He was born in Walton.
They had a 19 year old daughter, Margaret,
and had a 59 year old annuitant called Frances Hodgson
lodging with them. She was born in Preston.

CHARLES PARKER, keeper of the beerhouse, Fishwick
Strawberry Gardens, was summoned for having persons
in his house on Sunday 11th July, during prohibited hours.

P.S. Keefe said he, in company with another officer,
visited the defendant's house shortly before 5 o'clock on
the above date, and there found eight men and some females
in the house drinking beer.

For the defence it was contended that the gardens were
very much frequented, and that parties went there saying
they were from Blackburn and other places, and thereby
obtaining admission under false pretences. Mr. Parker
was in the gardens at the time.

Fined 10s and costs.

STEALING FRUIT
William King was charged with stealing one pound
of appleas and pears belonging to John Holden, of
the Strawberry Gardens, Fishwick Brow, on the
previous Thursday. He was found guilty and
sentenced to 21 days imprsonment with hard labour.
Preston Chronicle 18th August 1877
I think this is a Court Reporter's hearing error.
He should have heard 'Oldham'

  1. My dad (Allen Smith) ran the Strawberry Gardens briefly in 1980. I don't remember much about it unfortunately

  2. Barry, I think he was probably the steward at the Strawberry Club. The pub, as a beer house, went in the 1920's. Presumably he went from here to the Cattle Market?

  3. Yes, that would be correct. He was managing it temporarily.
