VIRGIN'S INN, Anchor Weind

VIRGINS' INN   #
3, 4, 5 or 6, Anchor Weind
*
formerly the "CURRIERS' ARMS"
and prior to that it was again called the Virgin's Inn
At the 1892 Licensing Sessions, whilst talking in the main about three public houses in adjacent New Street, the Chief Constable said,
"Then there was the Virgins Inn, in a miserable, narrow gully, narrower than New Street"
In the second photograph, below, you can see the New Street buildings at the rear.
The Virgins' Inn was demolished in 1894 as part of the town improvements. The ancient
building is said to have once been a farmhouse, and in its later years was used by country
women who had come to market, and could get cups of tea.
It is said that it was the last thatched  building in Preston, and standing in its
place now is a line of telephone kiosks by the side of what was the Post Office.

This image has been received from a descendant of Jane Lea,
who is, I believe, the lady standing in the doorway.
The photograph has been sent from Canada where Darren Smith,
a nephew of my correspondent, owns and runs the 'Lake of Bays'
brewery (click to visit) in Baysville, Ontario.
Apparently, a recent visitor to his brewery told him that
"The picture always reminds him of the Hob Inn in Bamber Bridge."

CHARGE OF STEALING AN ASS
A man named John Sharples, was charged with
stealing an ass, the property of Mr. T. Ascroft,
innkeeper and currier, of Anchor Weind.

It appeared in evidence that the animal was
stolen about three or four months ago, from the
prosecutor, and was not seen until the present
fair, when the prisoner was offering it for sale.
On being asked to account for his possession of
the ass, the prisoner said he had bought it some
time ago off an Irishman.

The proof of the prisoner's criminality not being
conclusive, he was cautioned and discharged.

  1. The Mr Rigby shown above in 1836 was Thomas Rigby. The 1828 Pigot's Directory of Preston lists Thomas Rigby at the Curriers' Arms in Anchor Wend (sic), and the 1832 Preston electoral rolls lists Thomas Rigby as an Innkeeper at 3 Anchor Wiend. He is again listed at the Curriers' Arms in Pigot's 1834 directory, although by that time the pub had changed names to Virgin's Inn, as evidenced by the death notice of his wife Jane in 1833. "DEATHS...On Monday, the 8th inst., Mrs. Rigby, of the Virgin's Inn, in this town, aged 77." (Preston Chronicle, Sat., 20 Apr 1833) Jane Rigby was buried in St Wilfrid's Cemetery on 10 Apr 1833, at which time it was recorded that she was of Market Place, and aged 78 years.
